How to Pack Your Dining Room

Are you planning on moving house soon? Better take the time to properly pack up your belongings. There are many rooms in the home, and each has its own challenges. To make your job a little easier, Winnipeg Moving has put together a simple guide showing how to pack your dining room. There are many fragile pieces in this room, so be sure to have plenty of packing supplies, such as:

  • Packing Paper
  • Dish Cartons
  • Cardboard Dividers
  • Packing Tape
  • Bubble Wrap

Packing Glassware & China

Save yourself a lot of stress and hassle by packing up the smaller, more fragile items first. This way you have plenty of time to make sure your china and glassware are securely wrapped for transit. Otherwise, they have a higher risk of breaking and cracking.

Wrap each glass and plate in a sheet of packing paper, or tissue paper. Crumple up some paper to fill the insides of glasses and bowls. Stack the plates vertically in the bottom of a standard dish carton. This is a sturdier box designed for holding the extra weight of dishes and glassware. You should be able to get at least two rows of plates side by side in the bottom. Place a layer of packing paper on top of the plates.

If there is room for more, you can place a layer of wrapped glasses on the paper. Use cardboard dividers to keep the glasses separated by individual cells.

Packing Home Decor

Since home decor is made in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials, the packing supplies and technique for each will require your best judgement. If the piece is breakable, such as ceramic or glass, wrap it in packing paper or tissue paper before boxing it. Sturdier pieces are usually okay without wrapping paper. However, you might want to place fabric items inside sealed plastic bags in case the boxes are exposed to moisture during transit.

Many people will pack their items by room, or like item with like items. Use your personal preference. It’s also a good idea to place heavier items on the bottom of the box and top with lighter items. Some other tips for packing home decor include:

  • Place cords for any electronics, appliances, and computers in separate bags and label.
  • Fill the empty spaces inside boxes with crumbled paper to prevent jostling.
  • Place a layer of bubble wrap around or between flat glass items, like mirrors.
  • Don’t overfill boxes. Wrap a layer of packing tape around the outside of heavy boxes.

Preparing Appliances for the Household Movers

Unplug your appliances and clean out any food. If your appliance has loose components, such as a refrigerator with plastic shelving, secure them with small pieces of tape. This prevents the shelves and drawers from moving around as the appliance is loaded onto the truck by your household movers.

Small countertop appliances can be secured in bubble wrap or packing paper, especially the glass components. Place them inside packing boxes with layers of packing paper between and crumpled up to fill empty spaces.

Preparing the Dining Room Furniture

You can protect dining room furniture in transit by breaking it down as much as possible. Turn tables and chairs over and remove the legs, making sure to keep nuts and bolts in a small plastic bag. This bag can even be taped to the underside of the table or placed inside a drawer on the table. Also, remember to tape all drawers shut to keep them from coming out. The legs of your tables and chairs can be wrapped separately in bubble wrap and taped together.

It takes a lot of extra effort and planning to make sure your belongings are properly packed for transport to a new home.
